This is an exciting role to take the lead on developing newsworthy stories and creating integrated multi-channel marketing and communications campaigns to build Octopus’ brand. The role will report into Octopus’ Communications Director and sit as part of the in-house Corporate Communications team, which forms part of Octopus’ 40 strong Marketing and Communications Function.
Octopus’ mission is to be in every home in the UK by 2030. This is an indication of the scale of our ambition as a business, as well as our desire to be a brand so trusted and loved by our customers that they would recommend us to their family and closest friends bringing us into their home.
Our communications strategy has a meaningful role to play in helping us achieve this. We are not as well known as we need to be and the person in this role can play a meaningful role in changing this over the coming year/s.
Octopus Group, which incorporates our six Octopus businesses operating in the energy supply and financial services market, was created in 2017. It provides a platform for us to tell the Octopus story, our belief in the positive impact of entrepreneurship and our commitment to transforming markets and customer expectations by building companies with one purpose – the relentless pursuit of ‘better’.
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about creating news and telling stories in an engaging and bold way. This person needs to have a strong track record of developing and executing successful media campaigns – both standalone PR initiatives and as part of integrated marketing and communications campaigns. They need to have experience of working with the consumer press and have a strong track record of creating campaign and story ideas that have achieved media cut through. They will need to think creatively about how to make the business relevant to its target press, and work alongside the wider Marketing team to make the most of content being created across our social, marketing and PR channels.
Experience of managing and contributing to integrated marketing and communications campaign will be essential. The communications strategy will need to incorporate a strong digital focus and the person in this role needs a good understanding of social media and how PR can help drive SEO, working in collaboration with our in-house Digital Marketing team and Head of Content.
You will be responsible for raising the profile of Octopus Group and its co-founders, who recently won the City AM UK Entrepreneur of the Year Award and in 2017 were named EY UK Entrepreneur of the Year Award. This will include identifying speaking opportunities as well as raising their profile in both traditional and in time social media.
They will need to enjoy working in a fast paced environment, multi-tasking, working autonomously as well as enjoying being a team player. They need to be confident and comfortable managing crisis communications and presenting to senior management. They will also act as a mentor to the Communications Executive to ensure we are delivering excellent press office services to journalists and our internal stakeholders.
In addition to building brand awareness through the media, they will also work closely with the Communications Director to provide strategic counsel and PR support across the group. They will need to be able to confidently demonstrate how PR can add value and drive business outcomes, and will be responsible for leading on some of the proactive PR programmes underway for individual businesses within the group. They will need experience of working with agencies and be confident managing multiple agencies to deliver value to the business.
Excellent attention to detail and organisation skills are essential. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate their ability to prioritise, project manage campaigns and work to tight deadlines. You will support the Communications Director on identifying and managing reputational risks to the business early on to ensure messaging is managed effectively across all communication channels.
