    This is an opportunity to join the recently established Octopus office in Melbourne to focus on renewable energy investments in Australia. The successful applicant will be able to join a team in Australia at the start of what promises to be an exciting period of growth as the country accelerates the transition away from coal towards renewables.

    Octopus is a fast-growing company with more than 800 employees. Since launching in 2000, we’ve established market leading positions in the UK across financial services, healthcare and energy. From a standing start in 2010 Octopus grew its energy business rapidly to become Europe’s largest non-utility renewable energy investor with investments in solar, wind, biomass, landfill gas, and gas peaking plants. The core technology in this portfolio is solar PV – Octopus now manages over 1.3 GW of solar projects in the UK, France, Italy and Australia on behalf of its investors and has the equivalent of nearly AUD 5 billion under management in the Energy team. In January 2018 an office was opened in Melbourne to take advantage of a rapidly growing renewable energy investment market and an opportunity to raise funds in Australia to invest in renewables. Solar PV will be the initial focus and in December 2018 the team closed its first investment into the 333 MWp solar project near Darlington Point in NSW, Australia. The business is now focused on raising and deploying two new funds: one targeted at institutional investors and one with an innovation theme aimed at high net worth individuals.


    The role will sit across and support both the fundraising and investment teams giving the successful candidate wide exposure across the business.


    The candidate must have the ability to work in Australia – no visa sponsorship or relocation package will be offered.


    Outline of responsibilities


    The candidate will be focusing initially on assisting with the following:

    • Origination activities including market research, organising and attending meetings, taking notes, preparing any follow up actions, and maintaining CRM systems of potential investors and investment opportunities.
    • Fundraising efforts by assisting in preparing presentation and due diligence materials as well as reviewing related fund documentation.

    Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to assist across the following functions:

    • Evaluating new investment opportunities across the sector, assisting the team in considering returns in the context of identified risks and their mitigants.
    • Financial, legal and technical due diligence on new investment opportunities, primarily through appointing and assisting in managing specialist external advisors.
    • Preparing analysis to support investment papers detailing new opportunities to the Investment Committee, taking notes of these meetings.
    • Supporting the procurement of project finance and power purchase agreements, including financial modelling and term sheet negotiation.
    • Post-acquisition portfolio management – including construction and operational monitoring and managing asset management contracts with external service providers.
    • Maintaining and enhancing the quality and integrity of data captured and reported, to investors as well as Octopus head office team in London.
    • ESG, PR, marketing and support other profile-raising activities.
    • Proactively seeking out improvements to maximise value for investors.



    • Bachelor’s Degree covering either Finance, Business/Commerce, Energy, Environment, Engineering or similar/relevant. Ideally candidates will have demonstrated interest in renewable energy either in course work, internships or independent research. This could include a post-graduate qualification related to the role (energy / renewables). Experience with one or more relevant technologies, especially solar PV, would be advantageous.
    • This is an entry-level role. Candidates with some prior (c1 year) experience in a professional environment would be considered suitable but the role would not suit candidates looking to progress to a more senior level beyond a current entry-level role.
    • This role does not offer a formal, structured graduate training programme. Training needs, potentially including professional qualifications, will be assessed around 1 year into the role.
    • Although Octopus is an established business in the UK, the Australian office is a start-up environment. The role is best suited to entrepreneurially-minded candidates who will proactively seek to help with whatever needs to be done to support the business. The candidate must be a self-starter with tenacity, initiative and a willingness to commit whatever it takes to deliver the required results.
    • Candidates must demonstrate or at least indicate potential to acquire the following business skills:
      • Exceptional written and verbal communication.
      • Exceptional project management and organisational skills. The role will require management of complex and regularly changing workloads and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
      • A commercial mindset, able to own decision making and understand the impact of these decisions on investors and potential investments.
      • A basic understanding of finance and accounting
      • Ability to communicate with and influence a broad range of individuals. The ability to tailor the communication content and style to the needs of the recipient will be important.
      • A strong team player with the confidence to exercise judgement appropriately, challenge and liaise with colleagues at all levels of seniority.
      • An ability to understand risks, reach a balanced appraisal of probability and severity and build workable risk mitigation strategies.
      • An ability to focus on the ultimate customer (the investors who trust us with their money) in all aspects of the role is essential.
