    About the role

     

    This role will take the lead on developing newsworthy stories and building strong media relationships to raise the profile of Octopus Group and its co-founders, who recently won the 2017 EY UK Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The role will report into Octopus Group’s Head of Corporate Communications and sit as part of the in-house communications team.

     

    Octopus’ mission is to be in every home in the UK by 2030. Our communications strategy has a meaningful role to play in helping us achieve this. Octopus Group is a recently formed umbrella brand (launched in 2017) that sits above Octopus’ six businesses, and provides a platform for us to tell the Octopus story and our commitment to transforming markets and customer expectations by building companies with one purpose – the relentless pursuit of ‘better’.

Part of the communications strategy for the next 12 months will be finding newsworthy and innovative ways to bring this to life in the media as we work to build brand awareness.

     

    We’re looking for someone who is passionate about creating news and telling stories in an engaging and bold way. This person needs to have a strong track record of developing and executing successful media campaigns and experience of working with the consumer press. They will need to think creatively about how to make the business relevant to its target press, 3 and work alongside the wider Group Marketing team to make the most of the content being created across our social, marketing and PR channels.

     

    They will need to enjoy working in a fast paced environment, multi-tasking, working autonomously as well as enjoying being a team player. They need to be confident and comfortable managing crisis communications and presenting to senior management. They will also act as a mentor to the Communications Executive to ensure we are delivering excellent press office services to journalists and our internal stakeholders.

    In addition to building brand awareness through the media, they will also work closely with the Group’s Head of Corporate Communications to provide strategic counsel and PR support across the group. They will need to be able to confidently demonstrate how PR can add value and drive business outcomes, and will be responsible for leading on some of the proactive PR programmes underway for individual businesses within the group. They will need experience of working with agencies and be confident managing multiple agencies to deliver value to the business.

     

    Excellent attention to detail and organisation skills are essential. We are looking for someone who can demonstrate their ability to prioritise, project manage campaigns and work to tight deadlines. You will support the Group Head of Corporate Communications on identifying and managing reputational risks to the business early on to ensure messaging is managed effectively across all communication channels.

Demonstrates a collegiate attitude to other teams (e.g. helping out beyond the point of personal return; responding to requests for general assistance). Works to relentlessly high standards.
    • Thinking what’s never been thought before: be bold and considered in their approach to media campaigns. Thinks of creative ways to make Octopus story relevant to our target audiences and media. Respond quickly to changing work demands. Generates and screens ideas (own and others) and manages their implementation.

    Qualifications

     Job Specific Experience/Technical Skills/Abilities

     

    • Either agency/in-house communications experience devising and implementing successful and creative media campaigns to support business goals and strengthen corporate reputation
    • Excellent media relation skills and press office management, capable of working to a high quality level and at pace. An exceptional ability to multi task and meticulous attention to detail. Ideally a strong contact book of business and consumer journalists
    • Experience of delivering effective consumer media campaigns
    • Ability to think strategically, but stay on top of tactical execution
    • Deliver integrated communications, considering all audiences and communication channels
    • Ability to articulate key messages, write copy and guide senior managers to deliver on message press and influencer coverage
    • Ability to deal with people at all levels and demonstrable stakeholder management skills
    • Provide communications counsel to internal stakeholders on both short- and long-term challenges and opportunities, ensuring they are strategically employed in the public domain
    • Positive, tenacious and can-do approach. Proactive and ambitious approach to communications
    • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, and willingness to 'pitch in' as required in a rapidly growing organisation
    • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
    • Develop effective outreach programmes to additional corporate stakeholders such as industry representatives and third-party groups
