  • Overview

    This is an opportunity to join the recently established Octopus office in Melbourne to focus on renewable energy investments in Australia. The successful applicant will be able to join a team in Australia at the start of what promises to be an exciting period of growth as the country accelerates the transition away from coal towards renewables.

    Responsibilities

    The role is part of a team responsible for originating, evaluating and executing new investment opportunities. This role will report to the Investment Director heading up the investment team in Australia. The role is expected to offer immediate exposure to transactions. The candidate must have the ability to work in Australia – no visa sponsorship or relocation package will be offered.

     

    Essential Job Functions

    Outline of responsibilities

     

    • Assist in origination activities including market research, organising and attending meetings, taking notes and maintaining a pipeline tracker of potential investment opportunities.
    • Evaluate new investment opportunities across the sector, assisting the team in considering returns in the context of identified risks and their mitigants.
    • Analyse and maintain complex financial models in a transparent, accurate and efficient manner.
    • Carry out financial, legal and technical due diligence on new investment opportunities, primarily through appointing and managing specialist external advisors.
    • Assist the team in preparing investment papers detailing new opportunities to the Investment Committee, taking notes of these meetings.
    • Support the procurement of project finance and power purchase agreements, including financial modelling and term sheet negotiation.
    • Assist in the preparation of transaction contracts through reviewing and assisting negotiations of contractual terms. Managing interactions with legal advisors.
    • Support on post-acquisition portfolio management – including construction and operational monitoring and managing asset management contracts with external service providers.
    • Maintain and enhance the quality and integrity of data captured and reported, including reporting to the Octopus head office team in London.
    • Proactively seek out improvements to maximise value for investors.
    • Support the fundraising efforts locally by assisting in preparing presentation materials.
    • Support profile raising activities.
    • Assist in engaging with energy policymakers to influence energy policy.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in either Commerce, Engineering or similar.
    • Prior (1-3yrs) experience ideally in an investment bank, private equity house, or in a corporate finance team of one of the big 4 accountants. Professional financial qualifications (accountancy, CFA/CA) and/or MBAs desirable but not essential.
    • Candidates with a post-graduate qualification related to the role (energy / renewables), but limited professional experience may also be considered.
    • A formal engineering or similar technical background may be beneficial but is not essential.
    • Core finance related business skills required:
      • An understanding of financial valuation theories and financial modelling skills.
      • Core accounting and tax skills and an ability to read financial statements confidently.
      • A commercial mindset, able to own investment decision making and understand the impact of these decisions on potential investments.
      • Exceptional written and verbal communication.
      • Exceptional project management and organisational skills. The role will require management of complex and regularly changing workloads and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
      • Understanding of legal concepts, particularly those relating to contracts for the acquisition, construction and management of renewable energy projects

    For all the above, entry level skills will be accepted but the candidate will need to demonstrate clear aptitude to develop these skills quickly and learn on the job.

    • Ability to communicate with and influence a broad range of individuals, ranging from team members, project developers, landowners, project finance teams, lawyers, technical advisors, policymakers, the Octopus investment committee members and potential investors. The ability to tailor the communication content and style to the needs of the recipient will be important.
    • Experience with one or more relevant technologies, especially solar PV, would be highly advantageous.
    • Experience of working in a start-up environment would also be beneficial.
    • A strong team player with the confidence to exercise judgement appropriately, challenge and liaise with colleagues at all levels of seniority.
    • An ability to understand risks, reach a balanced appraisal of probability and severity and build workable risk mitigation strategies.
    • A self-starter with high energy levels, tenacity, initiative and a willingness to commit whatever it takes to deliver the required results.
    • An ability to focus on the ultimate customer (the investors who trust us with their money) in all aspects of the role is essential.
