    About Octopus Energy Management

     

    Octopus Energy Management is a business division within Octopus Investments. It is made up of two business areas:

     

    1. Octopus Energy Investments (OEI): is a leading renewable energy investment business with a team of c50 currently managing a portfolio of c£2.6bn of energy assets and continuing to grow this. It is the largest independent owner of on-shore wind and solar in the UK. Assets under management also include a large and growing portfolio of efficient gas peaking power plants in addition to biomass and landfill gas assets. OEI manages assets mostly in the UK but is growing it’s international business to include France, Italy and Australia.
    2. Octopus Energy Services (OES): is responsible for managing Octopus’s stake in Reactive Technologies (an innovative energy technology company) and is establishing new energy services and solutions products for generation asset owners, corporates and Government.

    Octopus also owns a B2C supply business (Octopus Energy). This is a separate division of the Octopus group. Our objectives are for OEM and OE supply to work in an increasingly joined up way to ensure we and our investors can benefit from a more integrated energy company.

     

    Responsibilities

    Role and Responsibilities

     

    The role requires an original thinker that can combine technology with business strategy; an awareness of finance and investment; and the ability to affect business change. We are looking for someone that can embrace, create, share and implement a vision for the energy and investments business in a way that is completely different from the existing industry norm. This will both future proof the business and position Octopus to become the leading player in an energy industry that is going through transformational change.

    The candidate will be challenged to:

    • Set up a platform that can raise, invest and deploy [£10billion] of energy assets across different jurisdictions and technologies without adding headcount….
    • ….whilst facilitating the improvement in the performance of our energy assets through the management of the vast amounts of data across different energy assets and….
    • ….joining this up with solutions from OES (including Reactive Technologies) such that our assets deliver better risk/return compared to competitors whilst creating value within OES and Reactive. At the same time as…..
    • …..understanding how this will need to evolve over time so that we can continue to be at the forefront of the global energy industry.

    The role will be hands on requiring the ability to manage delivery across teams made up from different business areas with competing priorities. This will include teams within OEM (OEI and OES), the wider Octopus Group (Octopus Labs is where the IT function sits) and externally.

    Qualifications

    Essential Job Functions

     

     Suitable candidates will combine an understanding of how technology can be deployed to drive efficiency gains and asset performance within the energy industry…..

    • This person will need to be able to translate a vision for a business model into plan that encompasses technology
    • They need to be curious as to what are the latest developments and future trends and have the imagination to join the dots between different industries and their approaches with technology that might be applicable to OEM.… with a clarity of thinking on short and longer term business strategies that deliver significant value
    •  The role is a business strategy one that embraces technology and therefore it needs to have a deep understanding of how the strategy drives value through OEM’s P&L and an ability to deliver projects from short term technology implementation to longer term business transformation.
    • It will require excellent interpersonal and leadership skills to bring the team along with the change and be able to deliver projects across different teams

    • Business and financially savvy such that they can help develop the business strategy that creates value with technology at its core
    • Excellent communicator to enable people to understand where we are going and bring them happily along the journey
    • Extremely strong interpersonal skills and ability to forge trusted relationships quickly within teams
    • Self starter who balances commercial understanding, research and analytical skills well
    • Energy (or similar) experience
    • Strong project and process management skills
