Responsibilities

Role overview

 

We are looking for an experienced Portfolio Director to oversee funds invested in energy generating assets valued in excess of £2.7Bn.   The operational activities include solar power parks, wind farms, gas fired generators (also called Reserve Power, RP) and biomass and landfill gas projects as well as anaerobic digestion systems (AD).   The Funds invested are a mix of Octopus managed retail products (EIS, VCT, ITS), institutional fund LPs and project finance from a range of banks.   This role will be a key point of contact for investors and will represent Octopus at fund board level and on the Boards of investee companies.  

 

The role is a senior member of the Octopus Energy Asset Management (OEAM) team within the Octopus Energy Investments (OEI) department. The underlying investments, in c.300 energy generating companies, are managed by specialist teams within OEAM who focus on driving performance from the underlying assets. The Portfolio Director manages a team of three, reports to the head of OEAM and is a member of the OEAM Management Team.

 

The overall aim of the Portfolio team is to concentrate on the needs, structure and mandate of clients and ensure that those needs are met and, where possible, exceeded.

 

This includes:

 

  1. Investor relations
    1. Act as first port of call for any investor questions or concerns related to the Energy portfolio
    2. Ensure reports and financial information are well written, relevant, accurate, and timely and continually improve.
    3. Attend Board meetings and Committees as required
    4. Support any client related initiatives

  2. Financial and structural management of the funds
    1. Fund accounting
    2. Fund forecasting
    3. Manage all distributions and capital movements
    4. Direct financial policies, budgets and audit processes for underlying investments, working closely with the operational teams on delivery
    5. Direct the quarterly portfolio valuations process, working closely with the operational teams on delivery and owning the final reports
    6. Optimise fund structures, minimising tax leakage and costs

  3. Fundraising and on-boarding
    1. Support all aspects of Fundraising from initial pitches through detailed due diligence to establishing and launching the product or fund
    2. Plan and implement all aspects of OEAM management needed to manage the new Funds.   This might include establishing new teams to manage new technologies or new geographies.
    3. Oversee all aspects of onboarding new Funds and new Assets, including forecasting and ensuring adequate and competent resource is in place
    4. Support transaction due diligence as needed
    5. Deliver any pre or post acquisition restructurings that may be needed

Qualifications

 

Person specification

 

We are looking for someone with experience working with institutional investors, preferably in infrastructure. Strong (proven) communication and marketing skills are essential in order to deliver impeccable investor reports, to fundraise effectively and to interact with and influence stakeholders across the business. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years portfolio management experience including some transaction experience, will be highly numerate, potentially an ex-accountant, and will be an experienced people manager.   They will thrive in fast moving and growing business – continually improving the systems, processes and the quality of deliverables. They will have years of experience writing clear, concise, open, honest, accurate and easy to read board level reports and papers as well as marketing materials.
