Responsibilities

The Intermediate Capital team is raising a new fund targeted at £150m and is looking to hire an Investment Associate to supplement the existing team of six. Primary responsibilities are to be involved in origination, structuring and execution of debt and minority equity investments of up to £10m into profitable, growing, UK-based SMEs, across a range of sectors, and often alongside banks and / or private equity funds.  The successful candidate will be joining a team with backgrounds in private equity, banking and corporate finance.  We have a strong track record in the lower mid-market, with an established origination network and attractive risk adjusted returns.

In addition to the above, there will be involvement as required in other areas including building and developing origination networks, fundraising and fund management activities, as well as portfolio management.

 

The Intermediate Capital team is in the process of raising £150m from institutional investors with a strategy of investing debt and minority equity in lower mid-market buyouts.  The team currently manages Octopus Apollo VCT, a fund with c. £140m of assets under management.  Historically this fund has been able to invest in buy-outs and so has developed a strong track record on which the new fund will be raised.  Intermediate Capital sits within the broader Specialist Finance team in Octopus Investments, which currently manages over £1.5bn, raised mainly from retail investors into tax advantaged products (specifically VCT, EIS and Octopus’s Inheritance Tax Service). Octopus also manages almost £2bn of funds for institutional investors and this is an area that it is seeking to grow.

Qualifications

 

Outline of responsibilities

  • Origination of debt and minority equity investments into UK SMEs
  • Providing development and growth capital as well as funding for buyouts
  • Building and maintaining an origination network in the lower mid-market
  • Working collaboratively to execute all aspects of a deal, including negotiation, financial modelling, deal structuring, due diligence and documentation
  • Helping to prepare investment papers and present deals to Investment Committee
  • Other ad-hoc modelling, analysis and portfolio valuation and monitoring
  • Board observer involvement in portfolio companies

Outline of skills/experience required

  • Experience in originating, structuring and executing investments, ideally in VCT, UK SME private equity, or bank/direct lending
  • Excellent analytical, modelling and commercial skills for assessing and analysing investment opportunities
  • Exceptional academic and technical background ideally with a credible post-graduate qualification such as chartered accountancy, MBA or CFA.
  • Non-executive board/observer experience not essential but would be helpful
  • A flexible, self-starter, who thrives on challenges, and can manage multiple workstreams concurrently
  • A strong team player with the confidence to liaise with external counterparties at all levels of seniority
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
